Tony, re:Someone tell me again why Compaq bought DEC? And Tandem?

Existing DEC customer base? At best, they'll have the Alpha upgrade market, and those that don't upgrade will convert to Compaq XEON machines. Plus, they get the services associated with these machines. Problem is, I just don't see any new entrants choosing the Alpha platform. Anyway, hardly worth the price of acquiring DEC and definitley not worth the price of throwing more resources (both financial and managerial) towards the Alpha platform. IMO, a big reason CPQ trades at a lower multiple.

Someone tell me again why Compaq bought DEC?

Maybe it was for that explosively-growing VMS base. --snort--
