Dan G. D.

Actually I know a fellow who filed for a patent application on using the interference pattern between intersecting light waves to create multiples of the discrete freqs. and thereby calculate numbers or whatever the digits would represent. Ergo a "light cpu".

Are you any relation to Dave of Knick fame?

Daniel--

Re: Assigning a fiber DWDM color to each customer is the beginnings of a practical
optical switching capability without any conversion to electronics first. I was waiting
for someone to actually figure this out and start experimenting.

It is a good idea. As I understand, folks have been working on this for at least a few years now, but it is difficult. As a laser physicist, I have seen some talks on this subject. Many cool ideas, all very difficult to make practical. But then again, I was thinking some years ago that DWDM sounded impractical, and look where we are now. I must admit that I am thoroughly amazed that they can make frequency stable lasers that can stand up to commercial use; my hat is off to the engineers.
