Printrak is making some noise.

This is not up on Yahoo yet. I don't suppose AFIS will mind me reproducing the release here.

Printrak Sets Technology Milestone for Fingerprint ID Industry: World's Largest Fingerprint ID System Running in Anaheim Technology Center

ANAHEIM, Calif., March 9, 1999 - Printrak International Inc. (NASDAQ: AFIS) announced today that it is ahead of schedule and on budget with the world's largest fingerprint ID system, the Argentina National ID Program. As part of the Argentina program, the company has installed the world's largest fingerprint matching system at its Anaheim technology center. The system is running 24 hours a day and is exceeding customer requirements. Customer factory acceptance testing is planned for May 1999-only seven months after contract signature.

When the system is installed in Argentina, it will support 36,000 searches a day against a database of 50 million fingerprint records. It will filter and match 25 million records per second--far exceeding any competitive system.

The system will be used to ensure that each citizen of Argentina receives only one ID document. This is done by automatically encoding and searching the applicant's fingerprint card against a database containing the fingerprint data of all ID card holders. The system also allows government agencies and commercial enterprises to confirm the identity of card holders by performing a real-time automated fingerprint comparison-comparing the person's finger image data to data stored either on the card or in the central database.

The Argentina program is the first civilian ID program to use fingerprint matching technology to secure the issuance of ID cards to a population of 50 million or more citizens. Small systems have been attempted by other companies in other countries with mixed results. Printrak is providing the fingerprint matching technology under subcontract to Seimens Nixdorf, the prime contractor for the Argentina program.

The test system installed in the Anaheim technology center has the highest capacity of any fingerprint matching system in the world. The system is capable of processing 160,000 search transactions per day, far in excess of the 36,000 per day customer requirement. The matching accuracy is in excess of 98%.

Richard Giles, CEO and President of Printrak, says, "Our performance on the Argentina program sets a new standard in the industry. Our technology leadership was the key to winning the Argentina program. More important, our technology leadership has allowed us to do what other companies only dream about. Because we won the world's largest fingerprint ID program, we are now fortunate to be the only company that can actually prove its claims regarding large-scale ID systems. Other companies have to resort to elaborate explanations and system modeling in an attempt to justify their claims."

"None of our competitors' systems-including civilian and law enforcement systems--approach the capacity of the operational system in our Anaheim technology center. Only Printrak can show customers an actual working system today that is the fastest in the world. This Printrak advantage has already allowed us to win another passport ID system for the country of Guatemala, and it will surely lead to more Printrak programs with countries that are serious about installing large-scale fingerprint matching systems that actually work."

Printrak has implemented a number of new technologies in the system now running in the Anaheim technology center. These technologies include:

- High speed Intel-based 4-processor servers that provide scalability and future speed improvements.
- A fault tolerant distributed computing architecture providing 24 X 7 operation even in the event of processor failure.
- "Expert matching" and match thresholding techniques providing 98% or better match accuracy.

P.S. To preempt the inevitable uninformed question, THIS NEWS IS GOOD FOR PRINTRAK, BUT NOT BAD FOR IDENTIX BECAUSE IDENTIX IS NOT IN THE AFIS BUSINESS.
