Dear John and SJS: Have been reading your "Expert" comments on the Balkans problem. This bombing IMHO was a big mistake cause it will fail. First off we will NOT be able to take out their Command and Control Defense System--why?--Because it is built HIGHLY redundant (remember this was an iron curtain country not so long ago and they were preparing for Nuclear War for a loooong time), also the terrain is extremely protective of a defensive position. If we are unable to knock out the command structure we will begin to lose planes and pilots I seriously doubt ANY of the NATO participants USA included populations will stand for much of this. While in numbers they cannot compare to say IRAQ, that is made up in quality and terrain. So on balance, I would say this is a FAR more difficult situation and bombing alone WILL NOT remove him from power nor even destroy much of his capability to wage war, especially on the Albanians which are lightly equipped. So, we soon will be left with finding some hair brained scheme to extricate ourselves from this. I suspect Russia will help out in that area. JDN

*OT* Go EMC, agreed..thanks for your complete comments...We'll see about the overall market, economics, and Kosovo...You, obviously, are very knowledgable about the Kosovo situation, and I wont battle ya point-for-point...my final comment (will be that) Serb forces have never, ever had to face the onslaught that is coming....for the world's sake, hopefully they will realize how hopelessly outmatched they are..and that this is not some half-hearted UN attempt at containment...Being half-European, I do believe that the average Serb/Yugoslav interest in this war will last only as long as they think they have a chance to win....I don't believe that the average Serb/Yugoslav enjoys being the "bastard" of Europe for the last decade, and that it has only been acceptable while the battles have been won, and war has been at a distance...once the battle is clearly doomed, and the war hits closer to home, I think the wiser heads in Serbia will persuade Milosovic to negotiate....after all, I believe that most Serbia(ns) really want to be a part of the great Europe that is forming.............for us, it is important that the Western states are behind us.......(It is sad that Yeltsin is taking the position that he is.....Clearly wanting to maintain its ability to "control" their own local interference efforts without outside (russia) criticism/intervention....).I agree with you that it is not based on that...it is based on the fact that I truly believe unbelievable the amount of ethnic hatred in that part of the world...I struggle to understand the depth of this ....It is sad, indeed. For everyone sake, hope it is over soon...however, my view is Milosovic's support will crumble quickly if the Serb army/positions get trampled..which I think they will..

good luck to you, see you around, at least for today, things look ok (in the market, that is...)
