A business can buy a switch (from lucent/NT) which is located in their building. They can then arrange to get a block of phone numbers from the local telephone company. The local phone company installs a fixed number of lines going to the building - all messages are directed to this switch. This programmable switch can then route the message depending on the number. Most businesses use this arrangement if they have a large number of people in one location. The advantage being that they can use fewer lines relative to the # of phone numbers. The catch being that everyone cannot dial out/in at the same time. The costs will be much less than individual lines. My guess (including maintenance) is $5-10/number. Regards. Rajiv
