Thanks for the concern Gary and Larry,
Gary says.... I suspect that your broker either does not have enough of a history with you to permit a lower amount or is just terrified about what is going on in the tech market.

Larry says... Selling naked puts is ONLY FOR PROS !!!

I suspect that both are correct.. The puts I attempted to sell were the Jan 2001 85s. which seem conservative to me... I expect Dell to go up from here significantly. especially in the next 17 months. Therefore, I would expect the $48 in premium to be like taking candy from a baby.. But if I need 8500 for each contract in cash in the account, then what is the point, I would be better off just buying the stock and going long the 100 shares. That way, I could margin the stock if I so desire. I have heard lots of people selling puts on this thread. Do they have large long positions that give them the leverage/margin for it? My large position in Dell is in an IRA. I can't margin it, I can't buy any calls or sell puts against this position. The options position I take is outside that account in a separate, much smaller account. However, If I did get in trouble with the options, I do have the shares/resources with which to bail myself out. Just pay the tax man for the privledge.
