, among other things they use different chip rates (ASIC) which is what Ericsson and Qualcomm are coming to terms on relative to 3G. GSM is compatible with the proposed Ericsson chip rate

Others can answer this better than I but I think you've been misled by ERICY et al. GSM is compatible with neither chiprate, and will not upgrade more easily to WCDMA than CDMA2000.The differentiation IS NOT about ease of upgrade for GSM but an attempt by GSMers to make IS95 equally disadvantaged. There's been some talk about slightly greater efficiency for WCDMA due to the marginally higher chiprate but as of yet we haven't been shown the proof.
