Report: Alcatel aims to buy software firms

Alcatel, Europe's giant phone equipment maker, wants to acquire companies specializing in telecommunications
software in the coming month to complete its product offering, according to reports.

French newspaper Le Figaro reported the news, citing comments by Chief Executive Serge Tchuruk at the CeBit
computer and information technology fair in Hanover, Germany.

Tchuruk said Alcatel would target companies specializing in network management, billing, and software that enables
companies to offer various Internet services.

On March 2, Alcatel agreed to buy computer networking company Xylan for $2 billion in cash, or $37 a share, and two
days later announced the $350 million purchase of Assured Access Technology, which makes remote access equipment.
