I too heard that commercial for Wells Fargo - I thought they did a good job in promoting electronic banking. It prompted me to write to the president of SeaFirst (part of Bank of America) asking why they kept their online banking system (based on CheckFree) such a closely held secret. I use the SeaFirst online system and it works fine, but I have never seen or heard any sort of promotion for it.

Well you know what happens to letters like that - they get passed on down the line with a message saying "Please handle". But eventually I got a response from some underling at SeaFirst who was chiefly concerned to tell me about all the goodies they would give me in response to my letter - two months free online service, a year's free deposit box...

I explained that I had not written the letter to try to extract some freebies from them, but to try to get them to move towards the twentyfirst century. I was then told that everything is on hold until they are sure they have their Y2K problems under control - in other words, until some time next year. Who knows, that might even be the truth - and not just at SeaFirst.

Another well kept secret is CheckFree's involvement. The first time I loaded the software from SeaFirst there was one screen that appeared for about a microsecond which had CheckFree on it. When I loaded an upgrade a few months ago there wasn't even that!

Also heard a radio spot during my commute, but for Cascade Bank advertising online banking where you can "even pay your bills" online. I never heard of Cascade Bank before but that's not surprising since they only have twelve branches in three counties around here. But they seem to be jumping on the online-banking bandwagon with a vengeance.

From cascadebank.com (talk about an ugly web site!)

The time it takes to pay a bill depends on the merchant you need to pay. There are three different scenarios.

1) Payment to another Cascade Bank customer.
Whether or not the other customer is set up for online banking, you may send a payment which will be received the same day. If the merchant is set up with Cascade Bank Online, you will find their name on the Payee list.

2) Payments to commonly recognized merchants who are set up to receive electronic payments from our third party vendor.
Examples are the PUD or the phone company. These payments usually only take about two days.

[CheckFree must be this "third party vendor" based on the capability to do 3)...]

3) Payment to a party not set up for automatic bill payment.
In this case, an actual paper check is sent to the party via U.S. Mail. The bill payment must be set up online approximately five days before the due date.
