Safeskin Launches New Powder Free Latex Surgical Glove at the 46th Annual Association of Operating Room Nurses Congress

SAN DIEGO, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeskin Corporation (Nasdaq: SFSK), a leading manufacturer of disposable latex and synthetic gloves for the healthcare, high-technology and scientific industries, today announced the introduction of Safeskin PFS(TM), a powder free latex surgical glove, at the 46th Annual Association of Operating Room Nurses Congress in San Francisco, California.

Safeskin's new PFS surgical glove incorporates a powder-less donning agent, which facilitates donning before and during surgery. A key objection to the use of powder-free surgical gloves by operating room personnel has been the difficulty in donning gloves when hands are damp, for example, after washing.

Surgical gloves have traditionally incorporated powder for donning purposes. However glove powder has been implicated in several health risks including post-operative healing complications and allergic reactions that have been reported to have been caused by the airborne powder carrying latex proteins and chemicals. Because the Safeskin PFS surgical glove is powder-free, it eliminates the drying effects of glove powder on the skin, allowing end-users to maintain dermal protection.

"We are excited to announce the launch of this new powder-free surgical glove," said John Amat, Vice President of Medical Marketing for Safeskin Corporation. "The Safeskin PFS complements our strong market share position in exam gloves, allowing our customers to impact their bottom line positively through supplier consolidation. Medical professionals and patients will both benefit from the use of powder-free surgical gloves, which have been shown to reduce latex allergies and post-operative complications."

The powder-free segment is one of the fastest growing surgical glove segments. The United States surgical glove market is estimated at $250 million annually.
