To Thread - Good news regarding AFC's investment in Cerent Inc. ...

I was able to confirm with the company that CEO Green is on the BOD at Cerent Inc.. Their initial investment was $3 million that represents 6% ownership! AFC has made subsequent investments to maintain their 6% ownership position even after CISCO's $53 million investment.

To date, AFC has invested $5 million into Cerent Inc. and the long term plans are for Cerent Inc. to go public in 24 months. AFC's stock holdings in Cerent Inc. are reflected on their balance sheet as an investment "at cost".

AFC is going to get back to me to provide me the most recent figures as to what the current market value of Cerent Inc. is based on the last round of financing. My guess is that it is between 5-7 times the current "at cost" amount or $25-$35 million which represents as much as $0.45/share.

It was explained to me that AFC's reason for investing in Cerent Inc. was for their forward looking technology and if it was successful AFC would/could buy them out in the future. I was told that this option was now very limited as CSCO's investment (and interest) probably precludes them from buying Cerent Inc..

My observation is that it may not preclude CSCO from buying interests in both companies especially with (1) the overall industry consolidations and (2) CSCO's lack of presence in this market sector.

Cerent makes complementary products to AFC but at this time neither company is sharing technology or doing joint marketing programs. I suggested that they may want to explore some joint marketing programs to leverage their combined products. This may occur after our new management is in place.

Regarding new management announcements, I asked if we may see something in six month's or six days....They told me that it would be much sooner than six months!
