IBM makes Atom Force Microscopes. Previously Veeco was the exclusive distributor of the IBM AFM, and Veeco had a very close relationship to IBM. IBM's main competitor in AFMs is Digital Instruments. IBM, probably correctly, reasoned that Veeco would attempt to divert former IBM AFM customers to the Digital Instrument product. Therefore when the contract with Veeco expired, they selected a new exclusive distributor, Zygo (ZIGO), who happens to be a main competitor of Wyko, another division of Veeco. For what it is worth, SMIT also revoked their exclusive distribution agreement with VECO as well, but in that case it was due to poor sales.
