Mike However, when the topic is satellite telephony a la Globalstar, then I assume we have signals going all over cyberspace and in that case CDMA works its magic, i.e., provides greater spectral efficiency [and causes Iridium's stock price to fall off a cliff]. How am I doing?

Pretty good. Globalstar and other cell systems are probably best described as multi-point to multi-point, and they suffer from lots of self interference. CDMA is a good choice in any system with lots of [non-gaussian or self-induced] interference, ergo ... .

PS Strictly speaking, the particular scenario you gave is actually point to multi-point, but in any case it does not involve multiple transmitters interfering with one another and therefore CDMA loses many of its advantages.
