Hmmm P-Com & Siemens....... Siemens Introduces LMDS Solution At Telecom Business '99 Last-Mile Alternative Uses Broadband Radio Waves to Bypass Twisted Copper Pair BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 25, 1999--Siemens is taking telecommunications' last mile and going ''on the air.'' Starting this summer, new market entrants and existing service providers will be able to expand services to end users with a new Siemens product that takes advantage of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and point-to-multipoint broadband wireless technology. Siemens Information and Communication Networks Inc. is introducing AirNetXpress, a point-to-multipoint (PMP) access product that delivers two-way, high-speed data, video, Internet access and voice services from the network to the end user using local multipoint distribution service (LMDS) technology. Citing research that indicates the U.S. market for access solutions should reach $1.7 billion in 2003, Siemens is aggressively leveraging its position as a leader in telecommunications network integration services to penetrate the LMDS market. The AirNetXpress product will be shown at the Siemens booth (No. 5001) at the Telecom Business '99 Convention & Exposition, March 29-31 in Anaheim, Calif. The AirNetXpress solution is an easy-to-provision, high-capacity single platform that can support and deliver multiple services to areas not served by fiber and limited by traditional twisted copper pair wiring. Siemens' AirNetXpress offers service providers a high level of flexibility to support a wide range of applications for business and residential customers, such as videoconferencing, telemedicine, distance learning and virtual private networks. PMP technology provides a multiplicity of two-way services that are broadcast from one base station. Unlike a wired solution that requires an up-front investment, once a base station has been commissioned a wireless broadband network can grow with demand, thus limiting inventory. A PMP network enables a single radio at a base station location to communicate with many remote terminals located within a cluster of buildings. The ATM-based base station unit can send, receive and switch two-way transmissions to and from each remote terminal. The AirNetXpress system uses small antennas that provide maximum performance yet minimize space requirements and impact on the physical environment. Offering frequency division multiple access (FDMA) and time division multiple access (TDMA) services and operating in the 10-to-40 GHz ranges, the system uses the highest modulation scheme (64 Quadraphase Amplitude Modulation) currently available, which provides the best spectrum utilization for service providers. The system easily interfaces with PBXs, computers, local area networks (LANs), routers and bridges to deliver communications to local circuit- and packet-switching facilities. The product can be deployed cost-effectively to generate a quick return on investment. It is scalable, featuring a ''grow as you go'' build-out capability to maximize investment. Siemens has been working with P-Com Inc. (Nasdaq/NMS:PCMS - news) as joint development partners for wireless broadband and LMDS solutions. In January 1999, Siemens and P-Com announced that they had successfully completed the first phase of the commercial deployment of their point-to-multipoint (PMP) Wireless Access solution with WinStar Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq/NMS:WCII - news) in Washington D.C. P-Com Inc., headquartered in Campbell, Calif., develops, manufactures and markets network access systems for the worldwide wireless telecommunications market. The point-to-point, spread spectrum and point-to-multipoint radio links provided by P-Com are designed to satisfy the network requirements of cellular and personal communications service, corporate communications, public utilities and local governments.
