Modems . . .

My local cable TV company is Cablevision Systems. They are offering
@Home service in limited areas, and are expanding at a snails pace, even though 80% of their cable facilities are upgraded to HFC. I heard a CVC executive interviewed recently who said that the one thing holding back rapid expansion is the long time it is taking to do installations. He said that when modems are available that can be sold over the counter, and installed by the user, that this service will really take off. I know that there have been delays is certifying cable modems for DOCSIS standards, but what is the status of modem development with the plug and play USB interface ? It seems to me that this is the key to the future of AtHome.
