March Sales - Ames Reports Strong March Sales ROCKY HILL, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 1999--Ames Department Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMES - news) today announced net sales of $318.9 million for the five weeks ended April 3, 1999 compared with net sales of $202.3 million for the year earlier period, an increase of 57.6 percent. Net sales for the former Hills Stores Company for the period were $83.5 million. Net sales for the nine-week year-to-date period were $555.3 million, compared with $338.8 million in the year-earlier period, an increase of 63.9 percent. Comparable-store sales for the period were $230.7 million, compared with $200.0 million in the year-earlier period, an increase of 15.4 percent. Comparable-store sales were based on 294 stores. Comparable-store sales for the year-to-date period were $379.1 million, compared with $335.1 million last year, an increase of 13.1 percent. Joseph R. Ettore, Ames' President and Chief Executive Officer, said, ''March was an extraordinary month for Ames. We were going up against out own best efforts during last year's 40th Anniversary Sale where we showed a hard-to-beat comp sales increase of 11.5 percent. This year's March Mania was an absolute blowout with a comp sales increase of 15.4 percent. There were double digit increases in softlines, home and convenience categories. In particular, furniture, home entertainment and toys were strong. Our associates and our vendor-partners all worked together to achieve this new march record for Ames.''
