You don't need to imagine NYC. There are already groups in Texas advocating for a free Republic of Texas. At the moment they're basically nonviolent. If they turn violent, should we expect Serbia to threaten to bomb Washington if we try to defend ourselves from them? And if it comes to massacre, we have no further to look than Waco, or innocent lives lost at Ruby Ridge. I'm certainly no right wing paramilitary--quite the opposite. But I can call a spade a shovel when I see one.
