You can't believe anyone's claim that they won't sell your email address.

Use a different one for each vendor (hotmail, lycos, yahoo, hotbot), then you at least know who the scoundrel is. :)

I use those, so I never have to give my real address. Mail to the freebies is considered junk until proven otherwise. I still occasionally get junk due to someone forwarding personal mail from me and it ending up in some email address slurper, but it's never gotten out of hand.
