The important point for the short-term outlook on the stock is that stories or announcements about Windows2000 don't matter all that much while Microsoft focuses its marketing efforts on Office. Windows 2000 is of great strategic importance, but NT doesn't contribute to the bottom line anywhere near as much as Office does. That's the sort of thing we'll be hearing about for the next three months as the rollout machine gains steam.

And it's all going to be very positive news. We will, for instance, be reminded that no matter what happens down the road with Windows2000 or with consumer Windows because of the trial, Office is still capable of generating extraordinarily high revenues.

Microsoft stands on two legs now: consumer Windows and Office. They bring in the money. Enterprise systems -- Windows2000 and BackOffice -- are becoming more important, but still make a weak third leg. The delay news about Windows2000 and Linux stories have put focus on that part of the business for a few months. The trial has put focus on consumer Windows. But Microsoft's best "story" for the moment is Office. Expect them to tell it loudly and clearly until the boxes reach the shelves in June-ish.
