The AOL deal will only serve to guarantee a steady flow of traffic to the eBay site.

If there was ever any doubt that eBay is and will remain the clear leader, there can be no doubt now.

4 Years on AOL. 16 million AOL accounts now, probably at least doubling over the 4 year span.

eBay probably didn't need AOL, but why give anyone else a chance when you want to absolutely dominate the sector forever?

On a side note:

I had dinner with a group of very bright businessmen last night. I first told them about eBay last June, and predicted that eBay would be an exclusive IPO (even though eBay had not yet even filed to go IPO). They didn't believe me in June, and certainly didn't believe that eBay could have 500,000 auctions going on at any point in time.

Last night, I put forth my argument that I thought eBay had the potential to be the most powerful and successful company on Earth.

Their response: you might be right.

Scary. That they agreed with me (because they were wrong 9 months ago) and because it is quite possible that eBay could achieve this within 10 years.

Think about it. Name the companies that you think have the potential to be the most powerful or successful 10 years from now.

My list includes: Microsoft, General Electric, Ford, Disney, AOL, Coca-Cola, Cisco, Yahoo, Amazon and eBay. Maybe AT&T, MCI-Worldcom, Sony....

My biggest fear is that eBay will be bought out within the next 12 months...
