Caxton,

They're strictly my heuristics and haven't been heavily tested, but for hot IPOs, if you're looking to get in early, I believe that your best bets for a good price are:
1) within 5 minutes after the stock opens
2) mid to late afternoon (2-2:30) once several intraday support and resistance levels have been set and the stock has drifted well off of the earlier high
3) wait 3-4 days after the IPO

I tried this with ALLR, VIGN and VERT with some success, but, as always, your mileage may vary.
