IDC Canada PC Market Tracker indicates that, for the second year-in-a-row as well as for what is now the third time in the past four years, Compaq led all PC manufacturers with an overall 21 percent marketshare, compared to IBM Canada Limited with 20 percent, Dell Computer Corporation with 10 percent, Hewlett-Packard (Canada) Ltd. with 7 percent and Toshiba of Canada Limited with 5 percent.
Further, IDC Canada PC Market Tracker found that Compaq was first amongst Canadian PC vendors in sales of commercial desktops, with a 29 percent share; first in sales of consumer notebook PCs, with a 33 percent share; and first in sales of PC servers, with a 44 percent share.
Finally, IDC Canada PC Market Tracker revealed that Compaq is the favoured PC manufacturer amongst medium and large business customers. According to IDC, the Company achieved a 28 percent share in the medium-sized business segment and a 36 percent share in the large business market.
Overall, IDC Canada PC Market Tracker indicates that Compaq grew almost twice as fast as the industry in terms of the number of PCs sold in the Canadian marketplace during 1998. Compaq reported unit shipments of 501,000 in 1998 -- a 25 percent increase over the 401,000 units shipped in 1997.
''The Canadian PC market continues to be dominated by the top five vendors,'' says George Bulat, Manager, PC Research, IDC Canada Limited.
