RICHMOND HILL, ON, March 25 /CNW/ - Compaq Canada Inc.
announced today that, according to the just-released International Data
Corporation (IDC) Canada Limited PC Market Tracker, the Company was
Canada's leading supplier of personal computer technologies in 1998.

IDC Canada PC Market Tracker indicates that, for the second
year-in-a-row as well as for what is now the third time in the past four
years, Compaq led all PC manufacturers with an overall 21 percent
marketshare, compared to IBM Canada Limited with 20 percent, Dell
Computer Corporation with 10 percent, Hewlett-Packard (Canada) Ltd.
with 7 percent and Toshiba of Canada Limited with 5 percent.

Further, IDC Canada PC Market Tracker found that Compaq was first
amongst Canadian PC vendors in sales of commercial desktops, with a
29 percent share; first in sales of consumer notebook PCs, with a 33
percent share; and first in sales of PC servers, with a 44 percent share.

Finally, IDC Canada PC Market Tracker revealed that Compaq is the
favoured PC manufacturer amongst medium and large business
customers. According to IDC, the Company achieved a 28 percent share
in the medium-sized business segment and a 36 percent share in the
large business market.

Overall, IDC Canada PC Market Tracker indicates that Compaq grew
almost twice as fast as the industry in terms of the number of PCs sold
in the Canadian marketplace during 1998. Compaq reported unit
shipments of 501,000 in 1998 -- a 25 percent increase over the 401,000
units shipped in 1997.

''The Canadian PC market continues to be dominated by the top five
vendors,'' says George Bulat, Manager, PC Research, IDC Canada
Limited. ''Compaq continues to be the overwhelming leader in the PC
server market accounting for 44 percent of all Canadian shipments.
Despite some disappointments in the second half of the year, Compaq
finished in first place overall in the year-end standings with 21 percent of
the Canadian PC market.''

''Compaq remained Canada's number one choice in personal computing
in what was a year of considerable change for the Company,'' says Peter
Ciceri, President & Managing Director, Compaq Canada Inc. ''As in the
past, we are not content to rest on our laurels.

''Compaq has entered 1999 with the most complete line-up of products
and services it has ever marketed in Canada -- and we fully intend to
exploit our new strengths to become Canada's leading computer
company, whether you measure that in terms of marketshare, customer
satisfaction, quality or the technological innovation of our various
offerings.''
