I have not followed the Extreme Networks show, so I don't know what they're promoting or bashing. All I can say is GE is going to explode based on all industry predictions. When you say backbone, which backbone are you talking about? The campus or the core? On the campus, I think there is no question that GE will dominate. Btw, this is also why PMC has so much rev potential from its GE offerings. That said, I understand that ATM is by no means dead in the LAN - many corporations are utilizing it for its QoS and ability to handle voice video and data seemlessly. I also understand that Fore is doing okay and has introduced some robust new products that are competing rather well outside the LAN.

In the core, all industry studies and surveys with carriers, show that ATM is the preferred method of backbone traffic right now. Period, end of story. This will continue for many many years. IP QoS and ToS is getting there, and engineers are working very hard to make new standards like MPLS, Tag Switching and DiffServ ATM-like. Greenfield, data only ISPs and CLECs may opt for an all IP core, but voice (and certainly not video) is not there yet.

In the end, everyone preaches about their particular technology being the greatest. Again, one of the reasons I like PMC, is that they are relatively technology agnostic. Whoever wins, they will supply them.
