John -
there is another point to the shifts we have been seeing which seems to have been overlooked by most analysts. If IBM can create a model where they have the bulk of the components business and can offload the expense of maintaining a PC business through outsourcing (rather than getting out of the business), and can at the same time offer better product for their PC customers through the extensive DELL build to order capability, then they might well expand their business at the expense of CPQ and HP while improving profitability and focusing internal resources on their core competency. This could also be good business for DELL as they would develop a volume which would put them at the top of the industry, allowing cost reductions which would further improve their already first class manufacturing model. It also hedges DELL in any market shift from DELL to IBM.
