Well to play the fairly sure bet in optical, we're long unph, just wishing it would go lower so we can buy more. (waiting for the inevitable next tech wreck.) also long pmcs, but, like vtss, it's a play on atm and sonet. But with a 24% R&D budget and a massive win rate, we think pmcs will be in the right places.

but, as far as merchant semi plays on ip, i'll defer the question to the smarter half of our team, bulldozer.

bd?

Lee -

It depends on what you're talking about. IP alone is simply a communications protocol for packets of variable size to be exchanged. In fact you cannot have reliable Layer 3 IP communication without the error control feature supplied by the Layer 4 function TCP.

You can have IP over ATM, ATM over IP, IP over ATM over SONET, ATM over SONET, IP over ATM over SONET over DWDM or IP over DWDM. If you're talking about the new field of possible IP over DWDM at the component level - then you're really talking about optical plays.

TD mentioned JDS UNPH. Others in the field who seem to be executing well include SDLI & ETEK.

I like VTSS for more than SONET though (only 50% of revs). Their leadership in GE, Fibre, ATE and yes - DWDM (they make TIAs - Transimpedence Amplifiers, which assist the photodiode receivers in DWDM systems and SONET network elements to detect and convert photons into electrons. Ciena is a major customer of VTSS.)
