Arecessionary market sentiment has resulted in negative sales performances by all segments of the auto industry except the two-wheeler segment, which has posted a 10 per cent sales jump in April-February 1998-99 against the same period last year.

The worst performance has been recorded by the multi-utility vehicles (MUV) segment in the domestic market with sales dipping by 20 per cent to 95,833 units in the eleven months of the current fiscal as compared to 1,19,902 vehicles sold during the correspondign period last year. However, MUVs have done better in the global market as exports have gone up by 14 per cent during the review period compared to the last year figures, according to data compiled by the Association of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (AIAM).

While domestic sales of two-wheelers have gone up to 30,39,857 units in April-February compared to 27,69,099 units sold last year, the segment could not perform in the same manner in the international market as exports declined sharply by 25 per cent to 84,567 units from 1,12,029 units during the previous period.

During the review period, the commercial vehicles segment posted a 16 per cent sales decline while sales of three-wheelers and cars dropped by 13 per cent and four per cent, respectively.

On the exports front, except MUVs and three-wheelers, other segments, namely commercial vehicles, cars and two wheelers, registered a decline of 21 per cent, 17 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively, during April- February 1998-99. Exports of two-wheelers dropped to 84,567 units in the eleven months of the current fiscal as compared with 1,12,029 units exported in the same period last year.

Commercial vehicles exports was 8,002 units during the period against 10,123 units exported in the same period last year.

However, exports of MUVs and three-wheelers increased to 2,305 units and 18,819 units, respectively, in April-February this year against 2,020 units and 17,169 units exported in the same period last year.
