The superiority of DigitalMe over other approaches to anonymity

Unlike other approaches where the user masks his/her identity completely, with a digital identity vault, you must have a real identity and you put it in the vault. Your identity exists and is verifiable with DigitalMe, however the verification takes place at the vault not out there in public internet space.

This is a conceptual difference of great significance. I envision the digital vault being legally protected against intrusion. Like other personal records, your bank account statements and checks, a Court order would be required to obtain access to its contents. Legislation will ultimately protect the contents of the vault further.

The purpose of DigitalMe, as I envision it, is not to hide identities but to protect them.

That is a significant difference which many commentators have yet to grasp. It gives Novell commercial superiority in e-commerce where the value of DigitalMe will be in knowing that the person ordering the goods is the person they claim to be with absolute certainty. The benefit to the consumer is not to have to reveal everything about themselves to the vendor for verification in order to purchase goods over the internet.
