Paul,

There is something rather disturbing about forcing user code to schedule it's own hazard resolution. Because of this it will take a long time to get the compiler/software/driver infrastructure in place to allow IA64 to be used generally.

I have to wonder if the benefits of a VLIW architecture outweigh the problems. Traditional superscalar architectures and compilers are rock solid now. How long will it take IA-64 to get to that point?
