For some reason the thought hit me that if the SONY PS2 is for real, INTC might intentionally delay its usage of RAMBUS so as to stick it to SONY

Not very likely. INTC would be also sticking it to themselves. They have already given MU $500 million to ensure RMBS memory will go into production. In addition they have invested money in many other memory producers. The amount totals a least a billion dollars.

For the higher speed processors coming out late this year and next to work, memory access speeds must increase. The current 100Mhz will become a bottleneck. RMBS will increase this to 800Mhz. INTC has committed to RMBS to solve this problem.

The current beef is the delayed release of a chipset by INTC needed for RMBS support.
