SPEEDUS.COM Network Upgrade Enables Live Internet Broadcast of Full Motion Digital Video
NEW YORK, March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- SPEEDUS.COM, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPDE - news) today announced that it has completed the installation of a Linux-based Internet gateway transmitter in its Network Operations Center in Brooklyn, NY. The new transmitter gives SPEEDUS.COM's network Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) capability. The DVB capability, in conjunction with the Company's dedicated fiber optic backbone, microwave relays and its fourteen fully functional Internet Broadcast Stations, gives SPEEDUS.COM the ability to broadcast to selected groups on the Internet or so called ''multicast'' capability. SPEEDUS.COM now has the ability to provide entertainment quality transmission of all forms of full screen, full motion video and audio to its Internet customers in New York.

SPEEDUS.COM provides its SPEED(SM) super high-speed Internet service in New York. The SPEED service uses a 48 Mbps (48,000 kbps) downstream SPEED modem, which has approximately 31 times the downstream capability of a T-1 modem, 375 times the downstream capability of an ISDN 128 kbps modem and approximately 1,700 times the downstream capability of a 28.8 kbps modem.

The SPEED service is delivered via Internet Broadcast Stations that are fed from the SPEEDUS.COM Network Operations Center (NOC) in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. Six Internet Broadcast Stations are located in Manhattan, six are in Brooklyn and two are in Queens. The NOC has a complete satellite downlink facility with access to international media sources and a fully equipped data center along with Cisco 7200 hardware and New Media Communication CyberStream(TM) TRX100 Linux based gateway transmitter hardware and software. The CyberStream hardware and software is compliant with Digital Video Broadcast Multi-Protocol Encapsulation (DVB/MPE) and Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) standards. SPEEDUS.COM is capable of delivering live video streaming at up to 32 frames per second over its Internet network.

SPEEDUS.COM has initiated a SPEED pilot service and is connecting its first Internet subscribers. The SPEED service requires the purchase and installation of the SPEED modem. The SPEED modems are currently only available from the Company for $350. The Company plans to arrange financing for the cost of the SPEED modem to consumers and to increase its signal coverage area before commencing a major marketing campaign. Increased signal coverage through additional Internet Broadcast Stations is crucial to widespread availability of the SPEED service.
