Taiwan Powerchip '99 Net Forecast NT$744M Vs NT$3.4B Loss
Dow Jones Newswires

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. said Friday it expects to reach NT$744 million ($1=NT$33.124) in 1999 net profit, compared with the net loss of NT$3.4 billion recorded in 1998.

Powerchip Semiconductor also set a target for 1999 sales at NT$12.3 billion, up from NT$6.74 billion a year earlier, the company said in a news release.

The increase in earnings and sales is because that the chip industry is showing signs of a recovery, the company said.

In addition, Powerchip Semiconductor is planning on issuing global depositary receipts worth around US$200 million to finance its plant expansion and for working capital, the company said. No further details about the GDR issue were available.

Powerchip Semiconductor is scheduled to use advanced 0.18-micron line-width technology in the third quarter of the year, the company added.

The line-width reflects the density with which circuits are formed in the chip - the smaller the figure, the more transistors that can be packed in a given chip or wafer.

In trading on the Over-the-Counter Securities Exchange, Powerchip Semiconductor's stocks closed Friday NT$0.2 higher at NT$24.4 with 8.5 million shares traded.
