Hey FP,

**OT**

GO JNNE!!

**END OT**

I'm the Chief of Procurement for the United Nations Preventive Deployment Force (UNPREDEP). Up until 28 Feb, we were a vital presence in this country. Our mission has been described as the most successful UN Peacekeeping Mission to date ... despite the fact that we aren't really a peacekeeping mission. Our mandate was to protect the sovereignty of the Macedonian borders and prevent the incursion of Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Albania to the west and the Greeks to the south after the fall of Yugoslavia in '93.

Our mission officially came to a quick halt when China vetoed our existence in the Security Council. This was in retaliation to Macedonia's official recognition of Taiwan ... all for $1.6 billion in grants and loans. China was upset because they were one of the very first to recognize Macedonia after their independence. So, we are in the process of closing this mission.

I and my wife have been here for 21 months.

So now, let the fun and games begin. You have to maintain a sense of humour despite the impending severity of the situation. It does no good to live in fear. Prudence would dictate a common sense approach to the protest, etc ... ie, stay clear damn it!

This day has turned out to be VERY quiet. Good. The Macedonians are VERY nervous.

The mother of my Australian coworker ... she's Croatian ... said that we need WWIII. Get rid of all our angers and in the process get rid of the current generation, so we can start fresh with a clean slate.

Interesting statement.

Cheers for now, Rory.
