The etymology of the word Slav is controversial. Some think it came from the old norse word for slave which the Vikings called the people they subjugated during their wild years before they turned into a nation of Garrison Keilors. Slavic people ( esp. the Russians who undoubtedly got their name from the Vikings ) hotly dispute this.
