Thank you so much, LOD for a well balanced and reasonable explanation. I too use margin-although I dont let it get below 50% as I was very unhappy with things last August when I was near,although never at, a margin call.
I discovered the same thing: although I certainly do not have the excellent returns you and and applaud your success. Having only DELL, though it has given me great returns in the almost 2 years I've been in it, puts the margin % in too much risk when DELL goes down. Of course a lot of my DELL now has a basis of around 12 so the risk gets less and less with each split...but I have added shares at a much higher price too.
Having MSFT and AOL has certainly softened the blow lately, although my portfolio is still down almost 20% from its high this year (when DELL was post split 55).
