2. What additional sales does TDFX expect to generate and why?

I can answer the why: To make money. :)

Look at recent statistics for computer sales. . .

A recent market report indicates consumers spent less money for computers over the holidays (on a per-system basis) than they expected to. This means they were able to get the system they wanted for less. If TDFX can convince these consumers there is a compelling reason to spend the additional dollars on a better video card they stand a good chance of getting the dough. That makes the decision to swing a broad axe look pretty wise.

Right now the only components (aside from the basics of CPU and memory) which I think stand a chance of being system differentiators are video and DVD.

Customers don't have to demand 3dfx, they only need to request it. If the option is available and consumers pony up the money TDFX is on its way.
