Obviously the on-line auction business is very profitable relative to the expense. Amazon already has computers, customers, a billing system, staff, etc.... So the incremental cost of adding auctions is low.

But the fly in this soup is that champions of these profitless net companies say that first to market is of crucial importance. Now many people own both amzn and ebay. How they will reconcile this, I don't know. Either the auction biz is locked up by ebay, justifying their $20B market cap, or it isn't.

I forgot to say thanks for this post. So thanks.

The week time frame is interesting because that will synchronize with pumping up the stock for Q1 report. That will be perfect for Mary Meeker to announce that amzn will have seq rev growth from 98Q4 to 99Q1. Then it will also be time for Henry B. and Jamie K. to re-it. I hope I can ride amzn down to 130 and pick up some long shares to dump at 150's.
