In a battle of elbows, we don't know whether Appleton or Harmon came out on top. But pondering a battle of wits brings to mind CEO profiles of both Andy Grove and Steven Appleton I've seen over the years.

The articles would invariably include a "sound byte" description intended to capture the background and essence of the man. Grove's was typically "refugee from Hungary", Appleton's was "tennis star from Boise State". I'd bet that Grove learned a little more about preserving one's interests by keeping a step ahead of the Nazis than Appleton did by cashing that scholarship check every semester.

Even though Grove didn't make the contract, he made Intel, and created an atmosphere that would have survived long after his departure. I just can't see Intel smacking its palm on its forehead over this and saying, "Damn! The one thing we didn't spell out in the contract! That we'd give them the money and they wouldn't do chips for us!"
