Qualcomm Shares Rise on Expectations of Strong Patent Royalties

San Diego, March 26 (Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm Inc. shares rose as much as 22 percent on optimism payments the cellular-phone maker gets from manufacturers that use its technology will surge, after the company settled a dispute with rival Ericsson AB.

Qualcomm rose 14 9/16 to 113 in late morning trading of 8.25 million, making it fourth-most active. Earlier, shares of the San Diego-based company touched a record 119 15/16.

Qualcomm yesterday settled a two-and-a-half year patent dispute with Ericsson, which now will use Qualcomm's technology to complement its own. Support from the world's No. 3 cellular phone maker is expected to spread the use of Qualcomm's standards worldwide.

''They see royalties climbing, and the great thing about royalties is they're 100 percent profit,'' said Brian Modoff, an analyst at BT Alex. Brown Inc., who rates Qualcomm ''buy.''

The companies' settlement allows each to use the other's technology for the newest mobile-phone equipment. Analysts and investors expect Qualcomm to get most of the royalty payments because it has the bulk of the patents.
