I don't know about that. I had a professor that once claimed (in 1982) that the US had hit a high water mark in terms of freedoms, while the Soviet Union was rapidly becoming freer. I still don't believe he was right, although the current state of affairs seems to bear him out (LOL...he was really making a point that the Soviets were gaining on us).
I don't think things have gotten "worse" in the US in the last 20 years. I believe there are definite declines in certain types of freedoms, but many gains in other types. The internet has certainly freed us all from the shackles of a media that complied with the need to maintain our past (and now mildly chaotic) socio-political structure. It has made politics redundant in many respects. However, as I noted in an earlier post, politicians are fighting back (hell, Gore invented the internet, as we now know) and are as frightened as hell.
Think about it. They are hiring interns for the summer who inform them of what's going on by cruising threads like this. Then the legislators realize their own interns know more about life than they do (which was always true, but now it is overly apparent), and are scared to death. Their reaction? Legislate more. Put the shackles on, if we can, and where we can. They are scared. Either you are right and we are doomed, or (more likely) THEY are doomed.
