What I dislike is how they "value" a web site by the number of hits it receives.

I am sure some start-up sites have a bank of computers with several browsers open repeatedly refreshing and giving a false numbers of "hits".

They can then claim to advertisers that "Look how many hits per month we receive" and charge accordingly and "value" their web-site.

I believe Yahoo is the model. Take market cap and divide by number of hits .....

geez

I never open my junk mail, but since it keeps coming, I assume they must be making money somehow. I think of banner ads as the Internet version of junk mail.

I have ad blocker software. Today It's blocked about 150 ads, saving me 5 minutes or so at 56k. It adds up in a hurry, pun intended. I never clicked on the ads anyway, most people don't. I think the click rate is somewhere between 1 and 2 percent. It costs what, $30 or so per thousand impressions, so your paying 2 or 3 dollars for someone to come look at your website and a large percentage of those people will never buy. The math doesn't work for me, but apparently does for someone.
Will it continue. Yep. Probably get worse. In a few years when Gates and McCaw finally get us surrounded with satellite and everyone can have affordable high speed access it won't just be animated gifs, we'll probably have full video clips to watch on every web page, of course some bright guy will have blocker software for it, and i'll be clicking to his page not the advertisers. lol.
