India allows cable TV firms 2-way voice/data comms

NEW DELHI, March 26 (Reuters) - India said on Friday it will allow cable television firms to provide two-way voice and data communications under its new telecommunications policy (NTP 1999).

"Recognising the revolutionary potential of convergence of IT (information technology), telecom, television and consumer electronics...NTP 1999 allows Cable Service Providers to provide two-way voice and data commmunication after seeking the licence for fixed telecom services," the government said in a statement.
