Betaresearch, the technology branch of the Kirch Group, is specifying systems from C-Cube for the second generation d-box – Germany's multi-platform digital settop box. The new d-box will deliver enhanced interactive applications, including home shopping via the Web, stock portfolio management, and email. The d-box is available for both cable and satellite systems and provides access to hundreds of radio and television channels. It is DVB compliant. The Kirch Group interests include commercial channels SAT1 and DF1. It licenses its technology to Premiere, DF1, Deutsche Telekom, other service providers and decoder manufacturers. The first generation d-box is being manufactured by Nokia but the contract for the second generation box is believed to be going to Philips. ©Copyright 1999
