paul...re: "the business of pc's"

an interesting excercise may be to name the "fallen flags" of the pc sector.....and then one will see how the loss leaders exist but for a fleeting moment...the strategy of e-machines will backfire for they are establishing themselves as a low end product...quality may be great...but it's the market perception...similar to volkswagen/rolls royce...it takes a lot to change an image...it's easier for a high end quality perceived producer to introduce a low end product such as mercedes with it's euro "a" class...much like dell...the low end product is an intro to an up sell....be it mercedes "a" to "s" class or dell "celeron" to "p3"....it's in the name and marketing of same...perceived quality demands and obtains a market premium...always has always will...ala timex/rolex...both keep time..one keeps on ticking..the other is status...and the brand name status is more important in developing societies than in the usa...remember when you couldn't buy a cheap pc from big blue...but they caved into the clone price pressure...and soon exit ibm, stage right...more bananas for dell!!!....good luck on your positions...
