Abuck seems to have a point...

as I read Appleton's comments yesterday, they just didn't make sense in the "real world". I know Micron hates to have to pay the royalty, especially if it eats into already thinning margins (as would seem to be the case because of slipping DRAM prices). Any extension of existing technology OR slowing competitive advantage in new technology helps them. But the kicker is that this only works for a very short time. Sooner or later the superior technology has to emerge and you are either in the game or out.

So here's my guess: Micron continues to down play Rambus for the next few months. After Camino announcement Micron "miraculously" gets on board and announces full commitment to recently developed new manufacturing techniques for RDRAM. Fails in bluff against Intel, so tries to catch up with other chip makers.

Bad management, bad plan, bad execution, I'll bet.
