My mother's life in childhood was cursed by many servants who kept everything spotless and taught her many bad habits, like picking up after everyone. Later, after bankruptcies, wars, and revolutions, and marrying beneath herself, she kept house by herself. She was so troubled by the messes we made, that whenever she had enough credit to hire a maid she cleaned up the house for the job interview. Few candidates would accept even so, so recruitment went on for weeks. My mother finally decided she couldn't afford the time to have a maid.
