MB or Fleck, re: Internet privacy/security/E-commerce.
Lou Gerstner and Pat Gelsinger (Intel) recently projected W/W E-commerce would grow to $600 Billion by 2002. (Up from $6 billion in 1998). Both company's view E- commerce as a major force driving their enterprise solutions.

At the same time:
Recent polls show only 7% of users trust the Internet for transactions.
Only 2% of filers trust the net for IRS filings.
Visa claims 50% of total account disputes occur in the few transactions that occur on the net.
Europe has implemented privacy rules that make international E-commerce very difficult.
Privacy groups are extremely concerned about net privacy and have a mounted a number of initiatives with the Government.
An attempt by Image Data to create a national data base of Drivers license information has met extreme resistance from the public, states and congressmen, and it appears likely this will fail.
Lawmakers don't appear to have a good solution for net security in hand.

What are your views on this apparent dichotomy?
