What is it if it earns $80,000, $100,000, $200,000 or more a year and spends it all?

It is not a millionaire!

It may look upscale, drive upscale, dwell upscale, work upscale. It may have high occupational prestige. But it is definitely not financially independent. It is a financially dependent under accumulator of wealth.

Don't overemphasize the importance of material goods. It is much easier to own them than to graduate with honors from college, for instance.

And, they are not necessary for achieving financial independence.

Let's say that Mrs. Rule decides to give up putting together a detailed budget each year.

But she still wants to control spending. How can she accomplish this? By creating an environment of scarcity.

Her annual income is around $90,000. She takes 15% or $13,500 out of this and invests it. Now her household is conditioned, even if artificially, to live on an "annual income" of only $76,500.

About two-thirds of millionaires work between forty-five and fifty-five hours a week.
