Steven, agreed. And then add regionalisms and upbringing and you get a real mess. For example, I was brought up to use the verbs "bring" and "take" almost interchangeably, and I find that I need to stop for a second to think about which is correct. On the other hand, when people transmogrify word like "catercorner" into "kittycorner" or change a phase like "of the first water" into "of the first order" I want to shriek. Go figure. When in doubt, read it aloud: if it sings, .... Maybe if you hummed a few bars ...? TTFN, CTC
