Hi David,

The way we were taught at school was that the Americans were too concerned with other "important" stuff to be bothered. Finally the Japanese invited them to join the conflict and then all of a sudden it's "their" war...

Good one!<g>

However, if a certain prime minister had not been into a total appeasement policy and the French had acted when Alsase(sp)/Lorane was invaded.....there would have been, in all probability, no WW2. Hitler would not have gained the confidence of the military and public without initial "bloodless" successes. When the US entered, England was fighting bravely on ( and I mean that with the most respect ) but could never have hoped to "win" the war. The US simply overwhelmed the AXIS. Japan, we fought alone...England was overrun in asia years earlier. The Italians had trouble with Ethopia...we need not discuss their contributions to the Axis. So yes, I would call the winning of WW2 primarily American, which would make it "our war".

However, I liked your comment....has a ring of truth to it.<g>

Steve

*OT* I think the more important lesson from WW II in regards to England is the following. Germany bombed the daylights out of the UK for quite some time and did you guys give up? No, I seem to recall it just made you more determined to fight.

Now we are over Yugoslavia trying to win an all air campaign on their home turf. Are they going to surrender? Granted that Hitler did not have B-52s but give me a break, we have screwed the pooch on this one. What makes me the most mad is that we suddenly decide we need to go to war just as the revelation of the country that was giving illegal campaign contributions to our President is the same country that just waltzed in and stole nuclear arms secrets and then the press and public just forget all about it. Now Clinton is going to meet the Chinese minister to boot. I guess he is going to hand deliver a few more secrets. Too many coincidences lately that every time it looks bad for slick in the news, we suddenly find it necessary to bomb someone. This time the tail may not wag the dog, it may just get the dog seriously hurt. The idea behind the campaign is noble but the timing stinks.

Seems Clinton promised us we would be out of that entire region by Christmas 93, yeah, we are still waiting Willy and now you have enlarged the playing field and escalated things.

David,

I never mentioned the British, and I agree with your main points which were very well made..... And my apologies if I ever offended you, there was never any intent... I was talking about the Europeans, specifically the Germans who did nothing to stop Hitler before he gained tremendous power in their own country and began his rampage into other countries. All everyone did was flee. I've nothing disparaging to say about any of the people or countries that stood up against that kind of aggression, certainly not the British... Winston Churchill was one of my heroes, another was the Royal Air Force about which Churchill said, "Never have so many owed so much to so few."

You mean all I have to do to get an "Annie Haslam" (former lead singer of the classical rock band Renaissance) look-a-like, is to arrive in jolly ol' England with Hershey bars and nylons? Quick, I'm outta here and off to Wimbledon! <GGG> Yogi
