lml, there are times when anonymity would be desired (for some this would always be the case), and times when you might want to be announced. ICQ's on-off capabilities speak to this in a related way, but not directly per the situation you cite.

I'd consider your allusion to the download scenario as an active one, one in which you might prefer to have the prerogative of leaving your ID (IP address) or not. This is in contrast to a more passive state of announcement - when your IP or caller ID is constantly announcing itself - e.g., when you might want to be reachable for voice over Internet calls in the future. In the not too distant future you might want to be anonymous for downloading purposes, and still be "present" on the 'net for other applications, in other words.

All of the above fall under a major heading of considerations having to do with people habits and preferences, when sorting out behavioral traits in order to profile VoIP and other personalized real time applications, going forward.

Thus far, where VoIP has only mimicked the PSTN, these considerations have been only latent ones. With true Internet telephony and video apps of the future, these issues will come to the fore and require service providers to address them more intently. Frank_C.

Hi lml, that may sound good in theory, but you may want to consider the following (I don't know details of your connection or setup, so these are general comments):

--Few sites use IP address as a tracking mechanism. Cookies are the more prominent mechanism. What are you doing about cookies? Using any blocking software or doing any cookie administration yourself? (This is actually an interesting topic that might be worthy of discussion since cookies are used and abused so often).

--The hardware MAC address (if applicable) is a fixed and unique identifier which can be read. Telco modems also have a unique identifier.

--There are name fields you provide when installing/registering software that can be read by remote command. I don't know much about the specifics here, other than on returning to a site where I entered no information, I was prompted with "welcome back d horne" which is the way I always enter registration parameters for software. Maybe someone else knows the details here.

--Do you know what your DHCP lease durations are? weeks? months?

--Do you monitor you IP address so that you're certain that new leases aren't actually just renewals of the old lease with the same IP address?

dh

Well, lml,

You've already received two very intelligent responses from two of the best contributors to this thread. They've covered the territory pretty well. But I'm just a bit curious, to wit, ahem: What have you got to hide? Are you a closet Alt.2600er? What does anonymity buy you? Just curious.
